Pioneer, Perfecter of Our Faith

A joyful Scripture memory song from Hebrews 12:1–3, written by Amanda Vaday. Before a great cloud of witnesses we throw off the sin that entangles us and run the race with perseverance — fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, rose on the third day, and now sits at the right hand of God. Bright children's voices, warm syncopated piano, and playful bell tones make one of the Bible's great "keep running" passages easy for a family to learn by heart. And when the running gets hard, the bridge says it gently: my child, don't lose heart, and don't grow weary.

Bible verse · Little lesson

A verse to hide in your heart

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
— Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

Little lesson for little hearts

Hebrews pictures the Christian life as a race, and it starts with what we take off: "let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1). Sin is like a heavy coat and tangled laces — a runner throws them off. But the strength is not in our legs; it is in where we look: "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross" (Hebrews 12:2). He is the Pioneer who ran the race first, and the Perfecter who finishes it in us — "he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). Because Jesus both starts and finishes our faith, we never run to earn His love; we run because He has already run for us: "We love him, because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). And when the path gets hard, "consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds" (Hebrews 12:3). My child, don't lose heart — keep your eyes on Jesus.
