Such Were Some of Us

From the album Fearless — a song for the brave that never points down at anyone. It says such were some of US: the proud, the lost, every one of us apart from Christ — and that Jesus washes clean everyone who comes to Him. Pride is the old root, and "pride goeth before destruction" (Proverbs 16:18), but mercy made the call, and "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18). It is not a sneer at anyone; it is an invitation home — repent, trust, believe: Jesus Christ is risen, Jesus Christ is Lord.

Such Were Some of Us — Lyrics

Verse

They're praising "pride," and oh — I know that song, I sang it loud, I sang it all along, till grace made me low and showed me what I'd done… Pride goes before destruction — but mercy, mercy made the call.

Chorus

Such were some of us — the proud, the lost, washed in the blood, made new at the cross. Come home, come to Jesus, come, come home.

Declaration

Repent, trust, believe. Repent, just believe. Jesus Christ is risen, Jesus Christ is Lord. Be washed clean.

Bible verse · Little lesson

A verse to hide in your heart

“And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:11 (KJV)

Little lesson for little hearts

Before Paul wrote "such were some of you," he wrote a list — and every one of us belongs on it somewhere, for "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). That is why this song is sung in the first person: not "look how bad they are," but such WERE some of US. The root of it is pride — in our sin, our success, our very selves — and "pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). But the verse does not end at the list; it ends at a fountain: "but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified" (1 Corinthians 6:11). Grace makes us low, and then it carries us home. There is no sin so deep that the blood of Jesus cannot reach it — "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18) — and "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). So we never sneer at anyone still on that list; we stand beside them and call, for the door home is open today. Repent, trust, believe: Jesus Christ is risen, Jesus Christ is Lord — come, and be washed clean.
