Little lesson for little hearts
God loves to use the smallest voices. "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength" (Psalm 8:2) — Jesus quoted this very verse when the children praised Him in the temple (Matthew 21:16). This song is a little ones' prayer for the grown-ups they love, who can fall asleep chasing vapor — riches, screens, image, hurry — and forget the Lord (Ecclesiastes 1:2; Luke 8:14). The Bible calls us all to "awake out of sleep… the night is far spent" (Romans 13:11; Ephesians 5:14), to stop laying up treasures where moth and rust corrupt (Matthew 6:19-21), and to lift our eyes to the One who is coming. The lyrics don't scold; they intercede, asking God for the gentle, hidden heart in the daughters (1 Peter 3:3-4) and the watchful, lay-down-your-life strength in the sons (Ephesians 5:25; 1 Corinthians 16:13). And the song is grace-dependent from the first word — children can't wake a heart of stone, but God can give a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26), because Christ "died for us" while we were still asleep in sin (Romans 5:8).
