I Am the Vine

A bright, singable setting of Jesus' own words in John 15:5, written by Amanda Vaday. Jesus is the Vine and we are the branches — when we stay close and remain in Him, we bear much fruit, because apart from Him we can do nothing. A gentle call-and-response between the lead and the kids' harmonies makes this an easy one for little ones to learn by heart: "I and you… remain in me."

Bible verse · Little lesson

A verse to hide in your heart

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
— John 15:5 (KJV)

Little lesson for little hearts

Picture a grapevine in a garden. The big strong stem is called the vine, and the smaller branches grow right out of it. The branches cannot make grapes by themselves — they only bear fruit because the life of the vine flows up into them. If a branch breaks off and lies on the ground, it dries up, because it is no longer connected. Jesus used this exact picture to teach us about Himself: "I am the vine, ye are the branches… for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). Jesus is saying that He is our life. The good "fruit" God wants to see in us — love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness (Galatians 5:22–23) — does not come from trying really hard on our own. It grows when we stay joined to Jesus. The Bible word for staying joined is "abide," which means to remain close, to keep trusting Him, to talk to Him in prayer, to listen to His Word, and to walk with Him every day. This song says it the way a child can remember: "I and you." Jesus in you, and you in Jesus — that is where fruit comes from. The wonderful promise is that when we abide in Him, we "bring forth much fruit," and our lives point others to God (John 15:8). So stay close to the Vine; apart from Him we can do nothing, but joined to Him we can bear much fruit.
